AstroKid's COACHELLA ADVENTURE, Re-Visited by demand :-)
Hello Friends :P
“I'm not gonna waste my time correcting myths and rumors, You believe what you wanna believe”
Thursday 27th April 2006, I leave Australia (on my own account of course, I had heard that ICON sent me there or something along those lines) just after lunch only to find out that I was upgraded to Business Class on my Qantas flight, no complaints there. The onboard entertainment system for passengers had the Confessions album, so that came in handy :-P
I arrive at LAX 3 hours earlier of the same day (haha – you’ve got to love the time differences) franola was there to pick me up. How lucky am I so far! It was a pleasure meeting such a beautiful woman. She dropped me off at my hotel and then she was off to work and I went to meet imayahoo2 for lunch, who I met in 2001 at the official ICON pre party before a Drowned World Tour show at the Staples. Several days later after partying in West Hollywood… franola, wyspenni, martin and myself all took off headed for the Coachella Festival. 2 hours later and we arrived around midnight the night before the day Madonna was to perform. We had to wait for everyone to leave the grounds before we could establish our mark there. When that happened we went to the entrance to line up. We were not allowed to be where the lines started however we were nearby, the security guards kept telling us to leave but we didn’t. Some of the security were very nice and we even shared our donuts with them, I guess the most amusing part of that particular night was when one of the security guards asked me how long it took me to drive from Australia (hehe) She was a sweety though. A few hours later people started to arrive, well 2 anyways… then at about 4.30am, 2 other guys arrived. The majority of people arrived at around 6am. By this time there was about 20 of us. I should also mention that security kept threatening that our cars would be towed away should we not remove it from the parking lot, so we left the car a few miles down the road in front of a little neighborhood. We then caught a taxi back to the entrance. Later, a nice guy offered for us to go collect our car, as he would give us a ride to it. In the end, they weren’t really going to tow the cars, they were just saying that so we would leave…
None of us were too sure which entrance was our entrance as there were two of them… We started the line at the entrance that was closest to the Sahara Tent. As time passed (around 7am) 4 of us (martin, myself and 2 others that I cannot remember their names - sorry) thought we should go check out the 2nd entrance (further away from the Sahara Tent) just in case… This entrance was 4 times as big, so straight away we thought that that was our entrance… as the one we were at was a much smaller one, so it was bound to be some sort of a VIP entrance… To the right of the bigger entrance we saw the gate was open… we all got curious as we approached it we realized that we were entering the festival grounds. There were people everywhere working, we kept on walking thinking that we’d get caught very soon and kicked out (haha) we didn’t though, and we kept walking towards the Sohara tent in order to check it out. Most people were picking up rubbish whilst holding huge giant bags. One of the cleaners yelled out to me, “Are you just going to keep on walking or are your going to start work!!” So I thought… OK, I’ll grab some bags and give it to the other guys. So before we knew it we were amongst the other cleaners picking up rubbish with no sleep at all !! Of course we chose to clean the area surrounding the Sohara tent ;-) We also turned our Madonna shirts inside out so it wasn’t too obvious that we were fans.
This is Martin (right) and I (left) before we turned our Madonna shirts inside out hehe
(IF THIS IS WHAT I LOOK LIKE WITHOUT SLEEP THEN I WILL NEVER FORGET TO NOT SLEEP AGAIN!) haha
Martin and Izzy
Before we knew it, we were inside the tent, We could see the stage it was great to see the stage as they put it together :P Shortly after 2 of the boys left. Martin and I decided to stick around in hope that Madonna would do a sound check :P 2 hours later of cleaning the floors we started to see familiar faces… Stuart Price, Liz Rosenberg, The “Hat”, Jamie King and all the dancers… but no sign of Madonna. About 15 minutes later ! OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!! THE QUEEN ARRIVES ON STAGE !!!!!!!!!! I was so excited, by this time, I was as awake as anything!! (I was so so so tired guys, believe me!)
Here are some pictures that I managed to take from around the corner as I picked up rubbish :-P
They are not the best, but they are cool, She was wearing a black adidas pants and a singlet. She was there for about 20 minutes, looking at the stage telling people what to do and all that jazz. She then left for about an hour and all the dancers went on to rehearse for the show, without madonna…
THE STAGE ! AND TENT !

STAGE & TENT

STAGE
THE QUEEN !

In the mean time, I went and spoke to Tamara (dancer) she remembered me from RIT, the first thing she said was, “I know you, wow you are everywhere!” haha and she told me how she still had the Koala Bear that I gave her. We chatted and I told her to convince Madonna to go to Australia so that she would have a chance at holding a real Koala bear and not just the one I gave her hehe We chatted and she confirmed that they are going to Japan, unlike certain rumours that are spreading that Japan will be cancelled. Moments later, Jamie King was trying to get my attention from the stage, he wanted to put his plastic cup in the bag that I was collecting the trash with… how funny. Later in the line, I saw Tamara again with Cloud, I tapped him on the shoulder and said “hi”, he looked at me as if he knew me but was unsure… Tamara then said to him, It’s Israel, the Aussie! How cool! He then said. “Oh yeah, I have the Kangaroo that u gave me in my bedroom on my shelf on the wall. Was nice that they kept my presents that I gave them.
1 hour later, Madonna came back onstage with an outfit change (same pants though) red shirt with a black t-shirt on top to do her sound check !!! So theoretically we saw the show twice, Madonna for the sound check and then the actual show. Was so amazing to see Madonna right in front of us without make up, without the glamorous outfits. Just Madonna, a human being just like u and me. It’s an illusion really… But she is still our Queen!! Everyone in the tent was just sitting round watching ! so we did too. Half way through, The “Hat” came up to us and asked us what we were doing, and we replied, picking up rubbish.. And then he said we will have to leave now. So we did and we treasure what we saw. As we left the tent, there were security everywhere and we were worried that we were going to get attacked as we were not supposed to be in there. So instead of heading for the gates, we decided to sit quietly in the portable toilets immediately next to the tent. We locked the doors and sat quietly listening to Madonna’s sound check :P Soon we realized that we could see Madonna through the air vents, so Martin and I did just that and watched the rest of the sound check from the portable toilet (or sauna, as it felt like one - IT WAS SO HOT IN THERE!!!) JUST FOUND OUT THAT they are called Porta Potty's LOL. When the crowd was let into the festival, we left the toilet and went to the line to get our wrist bands. So yes… either way, whether we would have waited in line outside the festival or done what we did, we would have been first regardless. Makes you think what all the fuss is all about doesn’t it?
There was confusion at first, but security was extremely nice and explained to us what the deal was with the situation in regards to being in the very front mosh pit. The deal was, only people with these wrist bands would be granted access to be up front. They would clear out the mosh pit 1 hour prior to Madonna’s show and then only let people in with wrist bands to the mosh pit at the very front. So this was to be done at around 7pm. So throughout the day, we were all there in line, all coming and going for obvious reasons (shade breaks, food, toilets) I didn’t realize there would be a problem with this. I have been to several Madonna General Admission concerts all over the world and no one has a problem with people in line coming and going as they need to. It is actually quite unrealistic for anyone to stand non stop in a line from midday to 8pm at night without leaving the line. But I guess from what I hear If u leave the line then u loose your spot… How petty for anyone to think in such way. Each to their own I guess.
As 4pm ticked over, the security came and said that there were going to open the gates for us and we could stay in there till the concert started. WOW !!! We were all in shock !! Too bad if u were taking a toilet break or getting food !! Even if u had been there since the night before, if u weren’t there at that point in time, people in the line would rush in and you would have lost your spot, I was thankful to be in the line as this happened especially because I came from such a long way, and was the only Australian Madonna Fan amongst the group of people who had been waiting since the night before. (Oh yeah, there was just one Aussie Fan – me, myself and I, I heard there were 2, does anyone know the other one? Could it be that as a matter of fact certain people are so wrong about what they are saying, that they are making it up as they go? I will pray to the gods above that very soon in the near future, they will be become happy people and rid the negativity that they choose to surround themselves in. I wish them all the best.
I had made it, front row centre, smack bang in the middle. I got what I came for. I was delighted and extremely content. Paul Oakenfold was simply brilliant, I danced the entire way through his set :P (No Madonna songs though) When his time was over… It was our turn !! The Queen would grace the stage for us :P Security kept trying to push us back a few feet back, I assumed so that we would not get hit, as they were dismantling the stage and setting up Madonna’s, as time went on, they kept pushing us further and further back. We were all very frustrated and nervous, we didn’t understand why. Soon, all we could see were 7 photographers with huge big cameras that occupied the entire front row. I started to get very agitated and angry, as you do after waiting since the night before in order to be front row centre and watching it being taken away from u in the most unfair of ways. Meanwhile, coming in from the left and right, a huge entourage of people came into the mosh pit. I am talking, Adults, very old Grandparents (one even had a walking stick), little boys and girls, even a kid in a wheelchair !!! My front row centre had become 7th row centre. I was devastated. All the security kept saying was, these people are MADONNA family and friends, which can mean a whole lot of things really, and not necessarily MADONNA’s personal family and friends, but dancers family and friends, stage crew family and friends.. etc… No matter who they were, they all had MADONNA BACKSTAGE PASSES. Never in my life had I felt so betrayed by “Madonna’s camp” How dare they, How could they!!?? even Madonna’s camp, take away my front row, after traveling from Australia specifically just to see Madonna perform! 15 hours in a plane, 2.5 hours drive from Los Angeles, Not sleeping a wink the night before, standing in line allnight and all day, to have my spot taken away from me, just like that. The crowd was furious !! They became aggressive and angry and started pushing through the barrier in order to get through. I did no different, In fact I had no choice, as I was in front of the barrier. I saw people on my sides getting through, I tried the same, and managed to get to the front through a gap. Needless to say, Madonna’s Family and friends were crushed, and they soon left the pit (well most of them anyways) I was front row once again, not in the centre, but front row. A little to the left, It was very rough, the right side of me kept trying to push left so that they could end up more to the centre, but I was determined not to let that happen, I was trying my best to keep the spot I had landed the second time, as my front row centre was now occupied by a photographer. Oh well, that’s life. I sincerely hope that the word on what happened will prevent from another situation of this sort to occur again. You simply cannot take away a front row spot from any Madonna fan after they have earnt them! Not even Madonna’s people, It just isn’t fair.
The show went on, Madonna came onstage, it was wild, amazing and crazy. She was so close !!!!!
THIS CLOSE !!! Here is a very cool pic that Martin took who was to my left.
and the arm pointing on the right of this pic is my arm
I found this pic on the net: at the very front of this pic, you can see my Aussie hat that I was wearing :P
I LOVED EVERY MOMENT !!!
Now I will tell u about my moment that made gave me a permanent smile that will never come off. During Let It Will Be, She was crawling around the floor and got her attention as I kept yelling out “I LOVE YOU MADONNA” plus I was wearing my Aussie hat and waving my Aussie flag of course I was reaching out to her and she grabbed my left index finger with her index finger for about 4 seconds and she sang to me !!!!!!!!! I had tears of joy dripping out of my eyes. She had made my night even more memorable !!! I am In hope that I will see pics of this moment on the net at some point :-) I think some of the Italian fans or even tonybecks may have captured this as they were to the left of the stage... We'll see :-)
OH BOY MADONNA, THANK YOU!!!
The best part was having all the iconers coming up to me all excited coz they saw us holding fingers :P
Earlier she also grabbed Heathers hand (I forget her name on ICON - sorry) She is lovely, I was so happy to meet her !!!!
By the end of it all, I was so exhausted and drenched with my sweat and other peoples sweat !!
We left soon after hanging with tonybecks, gc79 and Heather, they are so lovely!
imayahoo2 (Josh) Thanks for being so beautiful towards me and for letting me hang out with your BF, he is top shelf. I have known you 5 years now and hopefully the next 5 years will be even better :-)

PS: FOR THE AUSSIES - The sign i made for MADONNA said "AUSTRALIA NEEDS YOU" it took me 3 hours to make during the night and I lost it during the run from the line into the tent, i had it in my pocket :-(
I am so sorry, I didn't get it to her, but at least I shoved my flag in front of her a few times and I told Tamara to have words with Madonna in regards to coming to Australia :-) So hopefully things might happen, you never know right? I tried my best guys.
Izzy xo
