I was able to attend the private party at Luke & Leroy due to the generous nature of a
I received a called on Saturday night to let me know that Stuart Price (aka Jacques Lucont) was scheduled to DJ at Luke & Leroy in NYC. Through our deductive reasoning, we figured out that there was a chance that M would be there 1st before her scheduled appearance at the infamous ROXY. Since I’ve been to this club before, I knew that this place was VERY SMALL, and intimate and I knew that I'd be real close to Madonna.
I also knew that the guest DJ’s always went on around midnight.
Even though I knew the ROXY gig was a sure bet, I took a chance and followed
through on the Luke & Leroy tip.Through various tips and updates, we found out that Luke & Leroy was a private party with a guest list only.

So anyone who just wanted to show up would not get in unless they were on the guest list. Luckily and oddly enough for me,I knew the mother of the bouncer at this club.

I called her around 9:15 to ask her if her son could get me on the list. I had just managed to call them as he was ready to leave his house to go to the club. He spoke to me and said that he really doesn’t have that much pull when it comes to the
private guest list, but that if I got there early when he arrived, my chance of getting in would be good. He also said that it was mostly a young crowd and I had to have the right look to get in. He told me to wear black, and that some of the guys
wear the Goth eye makeup. So my partner Gerard and I had to change our clothes at the last minute and we put on eye liner pencil on our eyes! I’ve never done anything like that before. But if it would get me in the club and closer to Madonna,
I didn’t even have to think about doing it. I just did it!

I arrived at 10:15pm and there were at least 100 people already on line in the pouring rain. We walked up to him andI introduced myself. He told me that it would be best to wait on the line and when we got up to the door, he would get
us in. The door policy was strict! We observed a lot of people getting thrown off the line. So we waited about 30 minutes and sure enough when we got up to the door, he told the door guy to let us in. Wee!!!!

Here’s the description of the club. Even though it’s two levels, it’s still quite small. The first floor has a bar and a lounge area in the back. The second floor is the dance floor and another smaller bar area. The DJ area is in the corner. It’s on the same
level as the dance floor and not secluded at all. So when we got up there we got a couple of beers and positioned ourselves on the dance floor. We kept edging our way closer and closer to the DJ.

At midnight, Stuart arrived and people applauded. He immediately went to work and started playing a lot of instrumental stuff.


Around 12:45am Madonna arrived! We knew this because all of a sudden the crowd just pushed back. Everyone was screaming for her. We saw the security guards with their flashlights making a way for her to the DJ area, and I saw her little blond head walk by. I immediately started taking pictures, along with everyone else.

Stuart stopped the music and Madonna got on the mic. She greeted the crowd and said that “We’re just going to play a little music for you.” And she asked the crowd not to push each other. So all I kept on doing was taking as many pictures as I could
until my battery ran out. From what I remember, they played the album version of Hung Up. Then they played at least two tracks from her new album, but not the full version with vocals. It was more of a dub with limited vocals. I recognized some of the lyrics from the press review of the album listening party. And what I can tell you is that the music is definitely revolutionary and something we haven’t heard before. Totally fresh and new. No re-invention going on with this album. She’s moved on from RIT!

So after my battery wore out, I was done “working” and then I just partied with Gerard, and then to my astonishment, they played EVERYBODY!!!! I was dancing and singing as loud as I can and I couldn’t even hear myself, because the music was so LOUD.

It was so amazing to be hearing that record 23 years later in a club with Madonna at the turntables. SO FUCKING AMAZING!

Then shortly after that song, she and Stuart left. It was such and exhausting night. It was so hot in there and everybody was pressed up against each other the entire time Madonna was there, which I’d say was close to a half an hour. While Madonna was with Stuart, she was moving and dancing. She put on the headphones to get a preview of what was coming up next, and she just basicallylooked radiant the entire time. She was definitely in a good mood.

This was such a special moment for me because this was the 3rd time this week that I got to see Madonna. I was at the NYC movie premiere of “I’m Going to Tell You a Secret”. I saw her get back on the horse with David Letterman on 53rd Street. And now
I got to party with Madonna at a club in New York City! And all of this happened on the week of my 33rd birthday. Good things happen in 3’s for me!!

So today, to thank the bouncer and his mom, I stopped by their house to bring them a little thank you gift of flowers (for her), and wine (for him). When people do good things for you, you should always thank them.

He also gave me some more insight to that night. He said that Madonna had shown up at the club at 10pm to do a sound check. Can you believe that? Even though she’s not performing, she is still professional enough to make sure the sound
system is sufficient for her.

The idea of her making an appearance at this club with this young crowd was by Junior Sanchez. He’s going to be doing a remix off of the new album, and it’s going to be called the “Misshapes Mix”, named after the Saturday club night at Luke & Leroys. He convinced her to make an appearance to connect with her younger fans, because she’s already got a hold on her older 80’s fans.

This is true. So Madonna agreed, and the rest is last night’s history.
